American Black Walnut Flooring from Hackworth Sawmill

Increasingly popular for those who want a dark coloured floor, American black walnut is one of the few hardwood flooring materials which offer a natural choice. Although oak flooring, which remains the preference of the majority of our customers, can be stained a darker colour (see walnut stain), American black walnut has a unique grain pattern and subtle variations in colour within each plank, giving a distinctive and interesting base for a wide range of furniture and fittings. All grades of the timber contain streaks and patches of the paler coloured sap wood which creates the interest and uniqueness in the floor, and in a character (or natural grade) adds to the grain patterns associated with the knots in the flooring to give it its special appeal and appearance.
An option for those who want a more even, dark colour, is to apply a walnut stain to the floor. The paler sap wood, being softer, absorbes the stain well, while it has less effect on the darker wood, and the overall effect is to even out the colour.
