Hardwood Flooring from Hackworth Sawmill

European Hardwood

European hardwoods, while limited in the range of species available, are renowned for their durability. Traditionally used for flooring at the top end of the range in the most expensive properties, European hardwood floors are now a cost effective option in all houses.
They offer a range of flooring in different widths and lengths, giving the customer the opportunity to match product to design, from narrow strips to wide, traditional floorboards, with all the advantages of hardwood flooring, easy to keep clean and maintain, and without the potential health and allergy risks of carpets. A feature of European hardwood is that it is a sustainable product and its use does not contribute to the destruction of tropical rain forests.

The main species of European hardwood are oak, ash, beech, and to a lesser extent cherry. European oak is characterised by the variety of its grain pattern which gives each floor a distinctive and unique appearance, particularly in the “character” grade. It is also easy to stain or smoke to produce a darker effect than its natural light honey colour.

European Ash

European ash is lighter in colour than oak except for the darker streaks of heart wood which is found in a number of boards.

European Beech

European beech, on the other hand, is slightly darker.

European Cherry

While technically a hardwood, European cherry is the least hard-wearing of the options available, and certainly less so than its Canadian equivalent. It is also lighter in colour with subtle shades of pale pink and green in some of the boards.
